received advanced training in traditional Chinese brush painting
with the landscape master Yu Wei. She earned her B.F.A. in
Illustration Design and Fine art through Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena, California. Soon after graduating, she was
recruited by Hallmark Cards, Inc. and moved to the Midwest to
begin her career as an in-house artist. Her passion for creative
growth in Chinese brush painting and the visual arts brought her
to teach art in Kansas City, which she has now done for over 13
years. She currently teaches courses in Chinese brush painting
for adults at the Kansas city Art Institute, Ford Learning
Center in Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Confucius Institute at KU
and ACED Program at UMKC.

through Kansas City Young Audiences. As Special Teaching Artist,
she brings her programs to over 35 schools each year, including
schools in Shawnee Mission, Kansas City, Independence, Liberty,
North KC, as well as the KC Public Libraries and Mid Continent
Libraries. Each year, the Nelson Foundations invites Valda to do
a Chinese brush painting demonstration in the Nelson Atkins
Chinese art gallery in the museum during their annual Chinese
New Year’s celebration. Valda has exhibited
watercolor art in First Friday openings in Downtown
Kansas City in 2007.
